Make smarter money decisions

A report by financial services company Standard & Poor revealed that only 25 percent of Filipinos are financially literate. Through the YouTube channel Pinoy Money Academy, former college instructor J3 Patiño helps viewers invest in the stock market or try their hands at entrepreneurship. His video 3 Forgotten Laws of Saving Money explains why saving is important and has garnered over 460,000 views. 

J3 finds it rewarding to hear stories of people who successfully cleared their debts and increased their investments with the help of his videos. He also said that creating videos deepens his expertise on money management.

“If you force yourself to publish a video every week, you learn something new in the process,” J3 said. “You push yourself. You grow out of your limits. You grow out of your comfort zone and you become more creative, so you get more ideas.”

Learn to code and create apps

As new technologies change the way people live, coding becomes a potentially useful and profitable skill. This is something Gian Javelona knew only too well. Armed with the determination to learn and improve his school’s enrollment system, Gian went on YouTube and Google Search to learn coding. This helped him develop a unified platform for a more efficient handling of classes, grades viewing, and other administrative processes. Gian’s app was a hit among his schoolmates and at age 19,  he started his company OrangeApps.

“You can learn a lot of things from YouTube videos like programming or doing business or marketing. I think that’s the good opportunity we have right now, especially the millennials. You could build something from scratch, even from your home, and scale it globally,” Gian said.

Step up your language game

Learning a new language equips a person for work or travel. It can also indulge a person’s fascination for other cultures. K-pop and K-drama fans, for example, would delight in a Korean conversation. That’s how the YouTube channel Buhay Korea becomes helpful.

Buhay Korea’s creator, Ana Park, is a Filipino who has been living in Seoul since 2003. She features snippets of Korean life in her YouTube channel, as well as basic Korean tutorials. Her first Korean language video lesson Learn Korean in Filipino-Lesson 1 has over 120,000 views.

“I chose to upload on YouTube because I could organize the videos in a playlist. It is easier to arrange them in a series,” Ana said. “In my own simple  way, I could help my fellow Filipinos learn a language that could help them communicate with Koreans and enjoy Korean content while also being able to share my adoptive country's culture.”
